Dr. Manoj Karkee, Assistant Professor, Biological Systems Engineering, WSU at Prosser will present:

"Modeling, Identification and Analysis of a Tractor and Towed Implement System"

Development and analysis of dynamic system models are essential to support model-based guidance controller development, which will help to reduce the development time and cost while improving the accuracy and robustness of the controller. Accurate vehicle models are also essential for real-time simulation and virtual prototyping, which have the potential of reducing vehicle development time and cost. In this work, three different tractor-and-single-axle-towed-implement models with varying degree of fidelity were developed to compare their responses with experimental responses. Field tests were carried out to collect input-output data for different maneuvering responses. The responses from all three models were similar at lower forward velocities and when the changes in the steering input were gentle. However, when the system was operated at higher forward velocities or a rapidly changing steering input was applied, only the dynamic model with tire relaxation length represented the system reasonably accurately. In the second part of this research, a sensitivity analysis method was used to identify the effect of system parameter uncertainty/variation on the system responses. Overall, the system was most sensitive to tire cornering stiffness and least sensitive to implement inertial parameters. Finally, a parameter identification method (PEM) was used to estimate uncertain model parameters. Accuracy of the model responses improved substantially when the model was simulated with the PEM estimated parameters.

October 29, 2010

Jon Magnuson, Senior Research Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), will present:

"Algal Biofuels Related research at PNNL"

This seminar will provide a high level overview of applied and basic research related to algal biofuels at PNNL.  This will include a discussion of the National Alliance for Advance Biofuels and Bioproducts (NAABB) and PNNL’s role in this Department of Energy, Office of the Biomass Program (DOE-OBP) funded algal consortium.  Since the six teams in the NAABB cover broad cross-disciplinary areas, and PNNL is participating in all but one of those teams, the research discussed will span biology, chemistry, materials science, engineering and modeling.  Other algae related research will also be discussed.  This includes a new project supported by OBP to examine marine macroalgae as a biomass feedstock for coastal regions.  Also, DOE Office of Science funded research on the basic science of cyanobacteria will be presented.  There are too many activities to go into great depth on any particular project.  Rather, the purpose of this overview is to provide sufficient detail to the members of the audience so that they can decide if further discussions with the various scientists and engineers involved are of interest.
